About Laser Skin Resurfacing
Laser skin resurfacing at SkinMD is a noninvasive aesthetic treatment that utilizes pulsating beams of laser energy with the Pixel Perfect and Alma ClearLift Laser Systems to rejuvenate the skin one layer at a time. This procedure (available as an ablative or nonablative treatment) is great for changing facial wrinkles and lines and for eliminating skin blemishes, acne scars, sun damage, and discoloration. Sometimes called a laser peel, laser skin resurfacing is considered a great skin therapy for people who want clearer, softer, younger-looking skin. Based on the needs of each patient's complexion, our providers will personalize each laser session for the most beneficial results. There is little to no recovery time needed for most laser skin resurfacing procedures. Any questions or concerns may be reviewed with our SkinMD team in Hurst or Weatherford, TX.
Types of Laser Treatments
SkinMD has two kinds of laser resurfacing skin procedures that are selected depending on your skin goals. Some are performed for milder cases of skin damage, while others are more aggressive:
- Ablative Laser Treatments (Pixel Perfect)
The Pixel Perfect Laser creates an ablative thermal channel in the skin, causing a micro-injury without damaging the neighboring tissue. Those micro-injured areas start the process of healing, which generates new collagen. As the collagen remodels, the skin will tighten and the texture will improve. Ablative lasers eliminate thin skin layers, similar to dermabrasion or a deep chemical peel, with a high level of control that permits the laser technician to avoid damage to the skin. Ablative lasers are ideal for tightening skin, shrinking pores, blending uneven pigmentation, correcting acne scars, and smoothing mild to moderate wrinkles. Sessions can take 30 minutes or more per appointment. The Pixel Perfect laser can treat the hands, neck, chest, and face.
- Nonablative Laser Treatments (Alma ClearLift)
Nonablative laser treatments will not remove the skin — the Alma ClearLift Laser System only creates micro-injuries to the precise area to prompt the body's natural healing response. Nonablative procedures are ideal for all skin types for minimizing wrinkles and fine lines on those who are willing to wait several months to see strong results. As short as 20-minute sessions, the Alma ClearLift may take a little longer for patients with more advanced damage or conditions to manage.

You have several factors to take into consideration when deciding which laser peel treatment is best for your skin. Laser skin resurfacing is designed for anyone who is unsatisfied with their general complexion. If you see sun damage, age spots, acne scars, lines and wrinkles, pigmentation, or redness concerns, laser skin resurfacing procedure may be needed to address these cosmetic flaws. Also, laser skin resurfacing is wonderful for patients who have a rough texture, scaly patches, or other skin surface problems. A laser peel isn't suggested for anyone who has very dark skin tones, active acne outbreaks, or skin conditions that can be triggered by the treatment. Also, there is a recovery period needed after laser peels. Certain patients, based on their skin condition, may require as many as 2 – 3 weeks for recovery.
When you are scheduled for a more intense or deeper laser resurfacing, you may be given a retinoid cream for 2 – 3 weeks before your laser procedure. The retinoid will prep the skin for better results. If your complexion only needs mild improvement, topical anesthesia may be applied to numb treated areas of the face. For the whole complexion or deeper laser procedures, a form of sedation may be used. Throughout the procedure, you can relax while the laser handpiece passes over your skin, directly targeting the precise sections for resurfacing. You may feel a warmth emit from the laser followed by cold air from the system's built-in cooling device. You can expect your skin to be a little red or "flushed" for a short time after our leave our office from a lighter laser treatment. If you are having a deep laser skin resurfacing, you may want to bring a sun hat to protect your skin. It will be red and sensitive to sunlight.
What to Expect
After light peels, an ointment will be smoothed over the treated skin and you can go home for your recovery. Your skin may look pink and there may be some swelling and irritation. These symptoms will subside in a few days and the skin peeling process will occur over the next 3 – 5-day period. For patients who are receiving a deeper laser peel, your recovery period will take longer. The treatment sections may be protected with dressings and the swelling, burning, and irritation side effects may be more intense. Pain medication can be prescribed to minimize these symptoms. The recovery time for a more intense laser peel may last several weeks. Every patient needs to reduce their UV exposure following their treatment and use sun protection frequently. For all peel intensities, the treated skin will naturally crust, flake, and peel off. It's vital to avoid accelerating the recovery process by not picking at your skin to prevent scarring and to shield the treated area from UV exposure. After the peeling is finished, the treated skin should feel smoother while also appearing clearer, rejuvenated, and younger.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does laser skin resurfacing cost?
We will make recommendations for your treatment and then discuss your fees. Every patient has different needs when it comes to their skin and laser skin resurfacing. Larger areas or multiple body parts will cost more than areas that need less coverage. SkinMD regularly offers skin treatment specials discounts and packages, so ask for more information at your appointment.
What's the best type of resurfacing for me?
We can help you choose which resurfacing option fits your concerns and goals in your initial consultation. What treatment is best for you will depend on the health of your skin, any skin problems, and the depth you want your treatment to reach. The length of recovery time might also be an important consideration. If you are unsure, it is better to try a milder treatment first, then re-assess after you see the outcomes to decide if you want something stronger for your second appointment.
How can I help my skin recover after a resurfacing treatment?
Someone on our staff will discuss with you ways to speed skin healing following your treatment. The number one rule is to not peel or pick flaking skin. Pulling off peeling skin can lead to long-term damage (scars). Also, forgo all hair removal methods on the treated skin, which includes waxing, shaving, or depilatory creams.
How often should I get laser resurfacing?
Based on the laser resurfacing method chosen for your procedure, you might need to wait a few weeks or even a few months between appointments. Deep laser treatments will give you results that last a long time; however, they do need more time for recovery. We will discuss how frequently you can return for appointments in your initial consultation.
