Do you need an experienced provider who understands the diagnosis and management of melasma? At SkinMD in Hurst and Weatherford, TX, you can turn to our Skin MD team to minimize the appearance of this hyperpigmentation condition. Known also as chloasma, melasma patches can appear on the forearms and facial skin as tan or brownish spots. The facial patterns of melasma (on the mid-face, cheekbones, or jawbone) sets it apart from other skin conditions that present dark patches on the skin. It is believed that melasma is triggered by hormones or overexposure to the sun. Men and women of all ages and skin colors can develop melasma (especially women). Hormonal fluctuations during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause can impact any person prone to melasma surfacing on the skin. Our medical and aesthetic team at SkinMD regularly provide medical-grade skin care treatments, such as brightening facials, chemical peels, laser treatments and more to minimize the appearance of the condition. Call our office and schedule a skin assessment to find out how we can improve the look of your melasma situation.
"Dr. Xia defines the highest quality of patient care. Professional, knowledgable, and personable. In my opinion, Dr. Xia is one of the finest MDs available."- Anonymous / Healthgrades / Jan 23, 2020
"Best experience I've had with a dermatologist in 16 years of needing skin cancer care. Dr. Xia is considerate and caring to a patient's needs. He performed a long, complicated MOHS surgery on my forehead. I was not new to MOHS, this was my third. The first was performed by a surgeon in another city and nothing about that experience left me willing to be proactive about my dermatology care. My follow-up appointments with Dr. Xia by comparison have been pleasant and helpful, which makes me a more compliant patient. As his patient, I felt listened to because he shows genuine concern for what you're asking or feeling unsure about. I'm very thankful to have had Dr. Xia as my surgeon and my follow-up dermatologist."- K.G. / Healthgrades / Nov 14, 2019
"No complaints. Have been seeing her for many years. She has removed a couple of basal cell places on my husband also. Would Highly recommend her and her staff."- J.W. / Google / Aug 23, 2019
"I saw Karen Sticka and she was AMAZING! She made me feel so relaxed and talked me through everything and made sure I knew what needed to be done vs if I just wanted it done as well as roughly how much it would cost so I wouldn’t be surprised when I checked out! Look forward to many visits to see her!"- M.S. / Facebook / Jul 27, 2019

The dark spots from melasma may be caused or triggered by numerous factors, such as race, hormone fluctuations, family history of the condition, and certain medications that make the skin more vulnerable to discoloration following exposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays. Excess sunlight exposure is regarded as a foremost cause of melasma, particularly in people with a hereditary predisposition to the condition.
Melasma is recognized by discoloration or hyperpigmentation mostly in the facial areas. There are three forms of facial patterns recognized in people with melasma: center of the face, on the cheekbones, and along the jawbone. When you have melasma on your mid-face, you may see darker pigmentation or hyperpigmentation on your cheeks, upper lip, nose, chin, and/or brow. Malar and mandibular patterns may be seen on the height of the cheekbones or along the jawline.
Your treatment options will be recommended to you based on your level of need. There are medical-grade topical ointments, lotions, and gels available to encourage skin lightening for melasma.
